International Conference Call Somalia

- Telecommunications in Somalia
The telecommunications sector has thrived in Somalia, despite the lack of a central government since 1991. The
mobile market has seven operators according to Budde.com.au, resulting in robust competition and low prices. Helping
to keep costs low is the lack of regulations and taxes.
According to CIA World Factbook, there were 57,200 fixed line subscribers in Somalia in 2014 for a fixed line telephone
density of about 1 subscriber for every 100 people.
Meanwhile, there were 5.5 million mobile phone subscribers, for a mobile
cellular telephone density of 53 mobile phones for every 100 people. Wireless phone
service is available in most of Somalia's major cities.
Surprisingly, Somalia has some of the lowest international telephone
calling rates in Africa.
During Somalia's civil war, the country's public telecommunications system was practically
destroyed. Private companies have filled in the gaps with limited fixed line services and citywide mobile networks
in most of the country's major cities. 3G services arrived in Somalia in 2012. The EASSy fiber optic submarine
cable system lands in Mogadishu, connecting Somalia with Europe and North America.
Just a handful of Somalians are Internet users with just 157,500 reported in 2014, or just 1.5 percent of the population.
About Somalia
- The Federal Republic of Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa and is bordered
by Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean. Somalia was once a British protectorate known
as British Somaliland.
The nation of Somalia was formed in 1960 when British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland joined together. In 1969,
a coup toppled the government, bringing socialist rule to the country. In 1991, the regime collapsed, bringing
in a new era of violence, a civil war, and resulting in the formation of an independent, but unrecognized by any
government, Republic of Somaliland in one section of the country.
Meanwhile, turmoil has continued to affect the Federal Republic of Somalia. Today, Somalia is considered to be
a "fragile state" and is home to an estimated 10,616,380 people. However, even that number is in dispute
due to nomadic lifestyles and refugee movements.
Somalia's economy is made up of agriculture and livestock, remittances and money transfers, and telecommunications.
Some of Somalia's main exports include: livestock, fish, hides, bananas, and charcoal.
A large portion of the population is nomadic and depends on livestock. At one point, Somalia had a small industrial
sector that processed agricultural goods. However, looting has decimated it. Most of the equipment has been sold
off as scrap metal.
Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, does have some economic activity including an airport, supermarkets and gas
stations, and hotels. There is no formal banking system in Somalia, making money transfer services a necessity.
Roughly $1.6 billion is reportedly transferred into Somalia each year.
Making International Phone Calls from Somalia
Somalia has some of the lowest international calling rates in all of Africa, making
calling other countries less of an obstacle than in the past. In order to place an international long distance
call from within Somalia, you must first dial 00 which is the exit code for Somalia. You will also need the international
country code for the country you are calling. After entering 00 plus the international country code, dial the phone
number.
To call someone in Somalia, you will need to first dial your country's exit code followed by Somalia's international
country code of 252. From there, you can dial the phone number.
