How did a tiny island nation such as Japan create one of the most advanced telecommunications
system in the world?
Japan has long embraced technology, emerging as a force to be reckoned with in electronics. In the 1980s, innovations
in telecommunications included the introduction of fiber optics, fax machines, and communications satellites. The
Japanese government-owned Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation remained a dominant player through the mid-1980s.
In 1985, Japan's Telecommunications Business Law went into effect. Under this law, the domestic communications
market was opened to competition which had the potential to end Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation's monopoly.
However, market entry was far from easy with tariffs, individual licensing, and a myriad of requirements that needed
approval by the minister. In 1989, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation lost its monopoly on international
communications when competitors entered the international market.
Japan is linked to Asia, Australia, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East via a series of submarine cables
and 7 satellite earth station.
