Russia Telecommunications
Russia is an expansive country with a population of about
142,470,272 as of July 2014. According to the CIA World Fact Book, nearly 43 million main telephone lines were
in use in 2012 with another 261.9 million mobile phones in use. To put this in perspective, in 1998, Russia had
fewer than 1 million mobile phone subscribers.
Significant changes to the country's telephone system have been made. For example, access to digital phone lines,
the Internet, and email has improved greatly and more than a thousand companies have been licensed to offer telecom
services. However, these modernizations remain spotty, and in many cases inadequate, in rural areas.
Russia's telecommunications system is connected to the rest of the world via satellite earth stations and submarine
fiber optic cables.
Russia Communications Providers
Of the more than one thousand licensed telecommunications
service providers in Russia, the following fixed line operators are among the largest: North West Telecom, Volga
Telecom, Siberia Telecom, CBOSS, Dalsvyaz Telecom, Moscow City Telephone Network, Center Telecom, Rostelecom, Southern
