Ireland Telecommunications
According to the World Factbook, Ireland had just over
2 million main telephone lines in use in 2012 and nearly 5 million mobile cellular subscribers. In 2009, Ireland
was home to over 3 million Internet subscribers. Broadband Internet access is increasing, especially in urban areas.
As far as Ireland's telecommunications system goes, it is a modern, digital system consisting of both cable and
microwave radio relay. Ireland's telecommunications system is dominated by a formerly state-owned operator, Eircom,
despite privatization. Ireland's telecommunications market first opened to competition in 1998.
Many years later, Eircom continues to hold the most marketshare in the fixed telephone lines space and is the largest
telecommunications company in Ireland. In addition to offering fixed line services, Eircom also offers mobile and
broadband Internet services.
Extensive fiber optic networks exist throughout the country and are operated by companies such as EirCom, BT Ireland,
UPC Ireland, and ESB Group.
Ireland's international telecommunications network is served by a satellite earth station as well as the Hibernia-Atlantic
submarine cable which links Ireland to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Dedicated capacity is
also available to other parts of the world.
The telecommunications market in Ireland is regulated by ComReg. It is open, and there is quite a bit of competition
for most services other than fixed-line services which continue to be dominated by Eircom.
The four major mobile telecommunications providers offering service in Ireland are: 3 Ireland, O2 Ireland, Vodafone
Ireland, and Meteor (Eircom). In addition, Ireland is home to six mobile network virtual operators (MNVOs): 48,
eMobile, Tesco Mobile, Blueface, Lycamobile, and Postfone.
With an open telecommunications market, Ireland has access to a vast array of services and technologies including
DSL, PDH, ATM, SDH, VoIP, Frame Relay, Wireless Broadband, and more.
