- Cable TV Bandwidth Issues:
These days, 'bandwidth' is the operative
word in television circles. It's the absence of bandwidth and is the significant problem currently that plagues
cable TV companies.
Recent advances in television, like digital programming and HDTV, are very resource intensive and take a lot of
bandwidth to transmit. Of course, for this increased amount of bandwidth, you will get much better picture quality
than with analog, and very much more programming choices.
Unfortunately for cable TV providers and patrons, cable television relies on underground cables that were put into
place largely before television became so bandwidth-intensive. This has caused cable companies to have a lot of
trouble bringing services like digital programming and HDTV to its valued consumers.
If you currently subscribe to cable, you might be able to upgrade to digital programming, or even access some HDTV,
but you will find your selection fairly limited and your charges high.
To resolve these limitations, cable companies are digging up all the old cables and replacing them with fiber-optics.
This is a very costly and time-consuming process, and still asks the significant question of what will cable companies
do when new technology makes fiber-optic cables obsolete.
Satellite television, on the other hand, transmits programming to a flotilla of orbiting satellites, which relay
it back to individual satellite dishes on Earth.
While DISH Network®'s bandwidth has impediments, they are nowhere near as pressing as those of cable TV. DISH
Network® has been broadcasting in digital format since its founding, and currently offers the largest selection
of HDTV programming available.
Because satellite service is nationwide, you can access these technologies even if your local cable company is
not able to offer them or even if you don't even have a local cable company.
All this talk about bandwidth boils down to the fact that cable TV is not able to provide as many channels or as
much service as DISH Network®.
While some surrounding areas might have a moderately large channel selection and digital or HDTV programming, most
areas will find their choices lacking. DISH Network®, however, offers over 800 channels incorporating special
programming and pay per view.
Because DISH Network® has been steadily growing, the resources it has to put into improved programming choices
are also growing.
So you can expect the selection to continue to
grow. And, DISH Network® offers plenty of features like:
- DVRs
- Dish on Demand
- Special Sports Programming
- Eelectronic Program Guides
Depending on your local cable company, you might be able to get some of these features or you might not.
