A conference call customer based in Hawaii hosts regular international conference calls with participants located in the pacific islands e.g. Guam, Marshall Islands, Yap, Micronesia, and also Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Some of the participants use phone systems that have 'music on hold' and when one of those participants temporarily removes themselves from the conference call, they use their hold button. This broadcasts music to the entire conference call and disrupts the conference call in process.

The solution was for the host to utilize the free feature that comes with the international conference call plan called Online Audio Console. The host simply logs in online via the Internet and can then 'mute' any line on the conference call that is producing any unwanted noise.

The Leader Dial Out feature enables the moderator to dial-out to attendees to bring them into the call. This is useful when no toll free access number exists in the attendees country. It is also used as a cost saving measure because the dial out rates are usually lower than the ITFS rates. Both methods of access can be used on the same international conference call.

We asked our operator services manager and this is what she said.

"To be honest, not a lot of customers realize they have this free (*0) keypad command option available to them. 24 hour operator assistance is for used for questions or issues that can arise 'during' a conference call.

So after speaking with the customer and explaining about this free option, then they can really benefit from it in the following ways:

Customer can get any issue resolved whatever they may need or have questions about regarding their international conference call -while they are actually on the conference call.

There are many possible reasons why a customer may want instant operator assistance. For example, if there is static interrupting a conference call, the operator can listen to each caller's line and determine which attendee is causing the background noise or line nuisances that sometimes occur.

The operator would tell the customer which participant's line is causing the issue, she could then disconnect it; she can reconnect that caller bringing the attendee back into the call with a much better connection. She can turn OFF entry tones if they are becoming disruptive for that conference call or she can turn ON entry and exit tones or enable or disable the name announce feature if desired.

The 24 hour operator is actually located at the international conferencing bridge in the USA, so she can effectively make any changes the customer requires, anytime night or day.

The operators are here to troubleshoot any problems or questions they may arise while the conference is in progress. And this is available to both the participant and the Leader of the call utilizing the (*0) keypad command. Also, it's good to know that if you need to determine what a Toll Free access number is for a specific country, our operators are only a keypad command (* 0) away to assist.

I believe operator assistance is used most frequently for dial-outs and international conference interference issues that can happen due to the diversity of different access methods available to the international conference call customer.

On any given global conference call there may be attendees that are using multiple access methods. Some attendees may be using VoIP to enter your conference call. Another guest may be dialing in with one of the many country specific toll free access numbers suppied by AIT.

Another conference call attendee may have dialed in using a mobile phone. Some may use a VoIP phone provider to dial in to your international conference call. When you have these many different types of access types possible, it's very important to have instant 24 hour operator assistance.

This is what can produce a successful international conference call result for all. Expert 24 hour operator assistance is what makes a huge difference between international conference call companies."

They are tempting because who really wants to pay if you can get it free? But be careful of the free conference call sites. There are a number of free conference calling sites on the Internet and they are free except for the brain damage we hear about from users who discard the so called free services.

These 'free' services have major limitations that would be important to most regular conference call users.

For example:
#1 They have no customer service. Have an issue? you are on your own.
#2 All of your attendees have to pay for their own long distance to dial-in.
#3 Advertising is heard by your attendees upon dial-in.
#4 The long distance fees your participants have to pay can be more than you would pay for the conferencing service with a paid vendor with full array of services.
#5 Your account is required to change dial-in numbers and pin codes periodically or daily, which becomes a problem for you and your participants, attempting to recall the new code for today.
#6 The number of participants you can have on a call can be very limited.

Although the International Conference Call Plan offers Toll Free access numbers in 63 countries, for instance if you have a participant located in Hong Kong or any of 60 other countries, they can dial in to your conference call using a special Hong Kong Toll Free number or any of the many other international toll free country access numbers that we provide. But what happens when you want to have a participant join your conference call and his/her country is not on the list of available Toll Free access countries?

Ring mode - Normal mode will simply dial the numbers in the customers list in the order they appear. This allows the customer to add up to four numbers per rule. If the first number fails, the system will automatically call the second and so on. Setting to 'Random' will randomize the list before sending it to our switch for calling. One example use for this feature would be allowing an equal distribution of calls to customer associates or agents if the Toll Free number was advertised. If requested, we can add a round robin mode too. Voicemail will not call anything, but it will send the incoming call to voicemail straight away. Please note, Enable voicemail has to be ticked for this to work.
