DISH
Network® - The Company
DISH Network®
is the satellite dish tv broadcasting brand name of
EchoStar Communications Corporation, an international and publicly held company headquartered in Englewood, Colorado,
USA.
- EchoStar Satellite L.L.C. is a public company
with approximately 20,000 employees. The Company and its subsidiaries deliver Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS)
television products and services to customers worldwide.
- Throughout its 24-year history,
EchoStar has demonstrated its entrepreneurial spirit by achieving significant industry firsts:
- First company to offer a satellite dish tv receiver
for less than $200
- First to develop a UHF remote control
- First to offer an Integrated Receiver Descrambler
(IRD) for C-band satellite TV
- First nationwide installation network dedicated
solely to satellite dish TV systems
- First to offer satellite receiver with built-in
digital video recording
- First Satellite dish TV company to offer local
channels to local markets in all 50 states
- HISTORY
- EchoStar's story began in 1980 when Chairman and
CEO, Charlie Ergen, entered the satellite television industry as a distributor of C-band TV systems. Joined by
his wife, Candy, and friend, James DeFranco, EchoStar Communications Corporation was formed. Operations quickly
expanded and the Company earned a reputation for innovation, while focusing on providing customers with state-of-the-art
equipment, dish tv systems and service.
- In 1987, EchoStar filed for a Direct Broadcast
Satellite (DBS) license with the Federal Communications Commission and was granted access to orbital slot 119°
West Longitude in 1992. The Company began its move toward providing its own DBS service on December 28, 1995, with
the successful launch of EchoStar I. That same year, EchoStar established the DISH Network® brand name.
EchoStar II, launched on September 10, 1996, expanded DISH Network®'s capacity. As EchoStar continued to acquire
new orbital slots (61.5°, 148° and 110°), it added to its fleet of satellites. EchoStar III was sent
into orbit on October 5, 1997. This was followed by the launch of EchoStar IV on May 8, 1998, and EchoStar V on
September 23, 1999. On July 14, 2000, over 10,000 EchoStar employees worldwide gathered to celebrate the launch
of EchoStar VI.
Today, the nine satellites that make up the EchoStar fleet have the capacity to provide hundreds of channels of
digital video, audio and data services via DISH Network® service to homes, businesses and schools throughout
the United States.
Because the focus was on customer service and cutting-edge equipment, it didn't take much time before EchoStar
began to grow.
In 1986, EchoStar introduced the world's first UHF remote control and just one year later, filed for a Direct Broadcast
Satellite (DBS) license with the FCC. They were granted that license in 1992.
EchoStar quickly began providing its own DBS service and in 1995, that goal became real with the launch of EchoStar
I from Xichang, China.
At that time, the DISH Network® brand name was created.
- DISH Network®
Today
- Ten years and after launching eight satellites
into orbit, EchoStar and DISH Network® continue to pursue that same innovative leadership that has diferentiated
them from the competition.
In 1999, DISH Network® brought out the DISH 500, the world's first and only 500-channel satellite TV system.
Within a few months after, DISH Network® does it again by releasing the new HDTV Satellite TV Receiver in January
of 2000.
By 2004, DISH Network® had become the first satellite TV service to offer local channels to all 50 states as
well as Washington, D.C. and it was DISH
Network® who said thanks to
their customers by giving away 1,000 complete high definition television systems.
Today, DISH Network® is the least expensive all-digital dish TV choice in America and recently, introduced
the DISH Player-DVR 942, the first multi-room satellite TV receiver that can record in high definition.
EchoStar has been full of innovation. Each year, EchoStar and DISH Network® have reaffirmed their standing
by realizing new levels of service and cutting-edge technology.
Partnering with communication masters such as SBC and Earthlink, DISH Network® has been able to offer even
greater discounts and services in the form of bundled dish tv packages.
Ranked No. 1 in Customer Satisfaction among Cable/Satellite TV Subscribers by J.D. Power and Associates, DISH Network®
reached their 10 millionth customer milestone in 2004 and boasts an impressive satellite network with the capacity
to provide hundreds of channels of digital video, audio and data services via DISH Network® service to homes,
businesses and schools throughout the United States.
With over 20,000 employees, EchoStar and DISH Network® remain dedicated to the delivery and advancement of
Direct Broadcast Satellite worldwide.
DISH Network® of The Future
- What's on the drawing board for EchoStar and DISH
Network®?
The satellite industry continues to grow and expand, creating new opportunities and exciting, innovative technologies.
High definition television and digital video recording are just two great examples of how far a little ingenuity
can take you.
DISH Network® recognizes this unlimited potential in satellite broadcasting and continues to look ahead,
exploring new services and programming choices for its customers. With the passage of the Satellite Home
Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 (SHVERA), DISH Network® anticipates the possibility of distant
